“Stop and Take a Deep Breath”
By Eric A. Schoppman

The current construction market and construction industry, as a whole, is going to have to stop and take a deep breath. Under current construction schedules committed to earlier this year, contractors are having to work overtime to make up for missed days due to subcontractors being over loaded and not being able to make their committed schedules.

Construction workers can only be productive when they work 40 – 50 hours per week. Like anyone else, they get tired working over 50 hours a week for extended periods of time. Fatigue sets in and those over worked employees need some downtime to recover. The biggest issue concerning over worked employees is that there is currently no light at the end of the tunnel. For every four (4) seasoned construction workers leaving the work force today, only one (1) young person enters the construction trades.

Due to these issues, General Contractors are going to have to extend construction schedules and owners are going to have to accept them. These longer schedules are going to increase construction costs as well as interest carried on projects.
